Women’s History Month- Cocoa Spaces Finding “Yes”

To honor the month of March as Women’s History Month, we here at KC Black Owned are working to capture the stories of women business owners within our network.

The Other Side of Fear

Porshia Mitchell, owner of Cocoa Spaces, is a great start to our series with her wise words to those who wish to follow their dreams and chase their own versions of success: “We limit ourselves based on what we are taught,” she writes, words full of pensive wisdom “it is our job to expand beyond our four walls and seek more. There is so much on the other side of fear.”

Project Engineer by Day

Porshia has 13 years of experience in engineering under her belt and is a project engineer by day. When she was turning 30, she struggled to find a micro event space that catered to what she was trying to bring to life: a small, intimate, and sophisticated birthday party. Unhappy with the small party venues available to her, Porshia recognized that there was a need for diversity in the type of event spaces available to people looking to celebrate with loved ones.

From her love of events and the joy she feels from bringing people together to connect, Porshia built Cocoa Spaces to invite people to share space and connect with one another. Located in Brookside East, Cocoa Spaces is 1300 sq ft of open, wide space that invites clients to tap into their creativity and imagination to create the event of their dreams. 12 foot industrial ceilings boast of playful energy and the custom-made bar on wheels adds a touch of sophistication to any event.

Believe in Yourself

Reflecting on the month of March, Porshia writes, “Women's History month as a woman business owner reminds me of how strong women are. We can do whatever we set our minds to.” We here at KC Black Owned are inspired by the way that Porshia has done just what she set out to do. Her “just go with it” attitude when opening Cocoa Spaces in 2022 is a large part of her words of success for those who may look for a sign to do what they love: “My secret to success is fully believing in myself. If you have confidence in your dream and your business, no one can keep you from moving forward. Don't let one "no" stop you, there is always a "yes" somewhere.”

Porshia recognized a need for a Black owned event space that catered to smaller parties looking for intimacy and connection, so she created just that. Like so many women before her, Porshia offers us a look of true and unencumbered empowerment: belief in oneself and the tenacity to create something truly unique and special.

Attributing her perseverance so far to her faith, Porshia has done what women everywhere dream of: she found her “yes”.
